What Does a Solar Installer Actually Do?

The short version
A solar installer builds and wires PV systems on roofs or ground mounts. It’s a hands-on trade with a clear daily routine: prepare the site, then complete the install.
The core tasks
Most of the work falls into three stages:
- Mount the racking that holds the panels in place, whether that’s rails on a roof or a ground-mounted frame.
- Set and secure the panels.
- Run wiring to the inverter, then test connections before the system goes live.
Some crews also handle conduit runs and grounding work for the inspector.
A typical day
The day starts early with loading and travel. On a roof job, fall protection goes up before installation begins. The crew then follows the layout while a lead assigns and checks each task. Two or three residential installers can often finish a system in one day. Larger commercial and utility projects run for weeks or months with rotating crews.
