Job Description

Clearway Energy seeks a Solar Technician to support operations and maintenance of utility-scale PV systems at our Frederick, Colorado facility, reporting to the Plant Manager. This is an onsite role with three progression levels and salary ranges from $54,000 to $107,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

About the Role

The Solar Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, servicing, and repairing solar PV systems and associated equipment to ensure safe, effective, and efficient operation of the facility.

Responsibilities

Level I

  • Assist higher-level technicians with maintenance tasks
  • Perform technical and administrative duties related to power facility operations and maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety requirements
  • Participate in required training including on-the-job training, self-study, computer-based training, and classroom instruction

Level II

  • Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance and operations within qualified scope
  • Work independently or as part of field crews
  • Travel as needed

Level III

  • Execute routine electrical troubleshooting and repair on PV solar equipment
  • Perform instrumentation calibration and troubleshooting
  • Conduct complex maintenance including distributed control systems and inverter troubleshooting
  • Complete work orders in preventive maintenance management systems
  • Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance on all PV solar equipment
  • Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders in coordination with Operations Center
  • Operate all electrical and mechanical PV solar power plant systems
  • Participate in required training, job hazard analysis (JHA), pre-job briefing (PJB), and lockout-tagout (LOTO) documentation
  • Write plant orders, procedures, operating instructions, and related documentation
  • Travel approximately 5% as required

Requirements

Level I

  • High school diploma or GED (or willing to obtain GED within first 6 months)
  • Demonstrable mechanical aptitude and basic electrical knowledge
  • Understanding of general workplace safety and ability to follow safety standards
  • Valid state driver's license with good driving record
  • Ability to work overtime and non-standard hours (nights, holidays, weekends)
  • Professional demeanor and excellent communication skills
  • Computer proficiency with standard business software
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Level II

  • 1+ years of power plant or PV solar operations & maintenance (O&M) or engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) experience
  • Alternatively, 2+ years of field experience with instrument & electrical (I&E), instrumentation & control (I&C), or commercial & industrial (C&I) electrician work
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals (single craft journeyman skills) including electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid state theory
  • Basic knowledge of operational characteristics and control devices installed in power facilities
  • Demonstrable mechanical aptitude and basic electrical knowledge

Level III

  • 4+ years of PV solar experience required (I&E, I&C, or C&I electrician experience may substitute)
  • Proven experience with multiple electrical and construction projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals (journeyman-level) including electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid state theory
  • Knowledge of complex analog and digital instrumentation and control systems
  • Proper methods for troubleshooting, repairing, and adjusting instruments and control systems
  • Experience with safe equipment clearance procedures, tool use, and plant safety rules
  • Understanding of maintenance and reporting procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical prints
  • Familiarity with PV solar plant terminology and nomenclature
  • Qualified to perform routine and emergency operations at a solar generation facility and switchyard
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing and work without direct supervision
  • Able to travel approximately 5%
