Preconstruction Manager - High Voltage & BESS Denver, Colorado Regular Full-Time

RES seeks a Preconstruction Manager to oversee battery energy storage systems (BESS) and high-voltage projects from initial opportunity through construction kick-off. Based in Denver, Colorado with hybrid flexibility (minimum 3 days on-site), this role bridges preconstruction planning and field execution, serving as interim project manager and coordinating across engineering, estimating, procurement, contracts, and construction teams until project handoff.

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional preconstruction activities from RFP phase through construction mobilization for BESS, high-voltage, and solar EPC opportunities
• Develop project execution strategies, identify key stakeholders, and prepare winning schedules and cost estimates in collaboration with operations and estimating teams
• Coordinate engineering, estimating, and procurement activities to align technical and commercial requirements with business and owner objectives
• Review and monitor design scope for changes affecting budget, schedule, and construction execution; document and communicate identified changes
• Prepare initial construction schedules, cash flow projections, and cancellation deliverables as required
• Coordinate accurate bidding documents with estimating, engineering, construction, and customer/owner teams
• Lead value engineering and value enhancement efforts, compiling options and presenting recommendations to proposal teams
• Review contracts, exhibits, scopes of work, engineering packages, and estimates for consistency and compliance
• Facilitate seamless project turnover from preconstruction to construction via Project Kick-off meetings, hand-off documentation, and Procore transfer
• Participate in client presentations and assist in contract review and approval before execution
• Define project expectations and success goals with customers/owners during design phase
• Support business development in establishing and maintaining customer relationships
• Gather and track owner feedback and design clarifications throughout the process
• Identify future project and collaboration opportunities with clients
• Facilitate incorporation of constructability, logistics solutions, and critical success factors into programming and conceptual design
• Support estimating and engineering teams in evaluating technical design aspects (drawings, specifications, schedules) and subcontractor proposals
• Create assumptions, clarifications, and exceptions (ACE) documents and risk/opportunity logs during proposal and estimating phases
• Lead preparation and presentation of project proposals to internal and external stakeholders
• Facilitate and lead Stage Gate and executive review/approval meetings
• Act as interim Project Manager on RES 3rd Party Construction projects until permanent assignment
• Organize and manage project information, documents, and correspondence; populate and maintain required documentation in Procore and SharePoint
• Lead SG1b RFP Kickoff meetings and prepare supporting deliverables for internal guidance
• Assign preconstruction deliverables and follow up on action items to maintain schedule
• Ensure required resources, supplies, subcontracts, and permits are in place to support mobilization
• Manage bidding and contracting of preconstruction work including geotechnical/geophysical investigations, topographical surveys, and utility location surveys
• Coordinate preconstruction site access and conditions/constructability reviews; ensure compliance with RES safety program
• Facilitate review of construction documents and communicate technical issues, accuracy concerns, and potential risks
• Serve as primary point of contact with project owners, third-party engineers, and consultants during preconstruction phase
• Understand and incorporate owner needs, goals, constraints, and requirements into design and technical specifications
• Promote open communication and issue resolution both internally and externally
• Lead preconstruction team in making critical decisions at the right time to maintain project schedule
• Review, coordinate, and provide comments on design documents
• Ensure site is ready for mobilization and construction handoff
• Follow safety and security procedures; report potentially unsafe conditions and ensure proper use of materials and equipment
• Comply with preconstruction processes and Stage-Gate procedures; identify continuous improvement opportunities
• Assist in negotiation of owner contracts and exhibits
• Work with contracts and legal teams to negotiate and close construction contracts, with focus on exhibits, ancillary documentation, and scope of work development
• Support procurement and project management teams in negotiating vendor supply and subcontractor agreements
• Attend work regularly and punctually; remain available for meetings across US Eastern to Pacific time zones
• Comply with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies and Procedures
• Supervise and guide indirect reports (junior Preconstruction Managers) as needed

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or construction/technical-related field
• 3 years or more of relevant construction or engineering experience
• PMP or similar Project Management Training (preferred)
• Intimate knowledge of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) construction across civil, electrical, structural, mechanical, SCADA, controls, fire, security, and commissioning scopes
• Knowledge of high-voltage substation and transmission line construction processes
• Knowledge of solar technical and construction processes (preferred)
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite programs
• Proficiency with Google Earth and GIS software
• Proficiency with Primavera P6 scheduling software
• Proficiency with Procore and SharePoint
• Experience with HCSS Heavy Bid (plus)
• Ability to travel 5-15%
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with sense of urgency
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to supervise and guide indirect reports
• Ability to quickly develop understanding of projects using available resources
• Ability to manage and problem-solve complex technical and commercial issues
