Job Description

Clearway Energy seeks a Senior Associate for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Modeling and Structuring in Denver, Colorado. You will develop quantitative models and optimization frameworks that drive BESS valuation, structured products pricing, renewable and gas generation optimization, and power market analysis. Your work will directly inform trading, origination, development, and asset management decisions across the organization, and you will build and enhance Clearway's internal quantitative modeling platform (CWENQuant).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy production-ready optimization models and quantitative analysis for BESS dispatch optimization, renewables, gas generation, and data center infrastructure projects across the US
  • Build stochastic and machine learning/deep learning models to forecast day-ahead, ancillary, and real-time power prices based on load, gas prices, wind, and solar generation to inform trading strategies
  • Develop and maintain gas dispatch, heat rate call option (HRCO), toll, and other structured pricing models; perform mark-to-market analysis and support due diligence and credit analytics
  • Benchmark models against actual operations and market outcomes to improve forecast accuracy and optimization performance
  • Build and enhance CWENQuant; develop data pipelines with internal and external resources, create automated workflows, and build market data dashboards using data science and optimization techniques
  • Analyze trading forwards versus historical and fundamental power price forecasts to inform trading strategies, risk practices, and origination deals
  • Monitor macro and micro market conditions and assess their impact on power markets

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of quantitative or modeling experience, preferably within the energy sector (trading firms, banks, utilities, independent power producers, ISOs, or BESS companies)
  • Proficiency in Python; additional programming in R, SQL, or similar languages
  • Hands-on experience developing machine learning or deep learning models using scikit-learn, Keras, or TensorFlow
  • Working experience with linear and mixed-integer programming tools such as PuLP, Gurobi, or CPLEX
  • Demonstrated experience developing stochastic models from scratch
  • Knowledge of BESS, renewable, and conventional gas asset modeling (strongly preferred)
  • Understanding of power market economics, wholesale market structure, and asset operations in ISO markets (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.)
  • Proven ability to build high-quality, robust, and scalable quantitative optimization models and stochastic or machine learning forecasting frameworks for price, load, or renewable generation
  • US work authorization; Clearway will not sponsor non-immigrant visas (H-1B, TN, E-3, etc.) for this position

Benefits

  • Salary: $137,000–$177,000 USD (based on location, skills, experience, education, and certifications)
  • Annual cash bonus eligible, subject to personal and company performance goals
  • Comprehensive benefits for employees working 20+ hours per week: generous PTO, medical/dental/vision coverage, HSA with company contributions, health and dependent daycare FSAs, commuter benefits, relocation assistance, 401(k) with employer match, life and accident insurance, fertility programs, adoption assistance, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and benefits for same-sex marriages and domestic partnerships
  • Hybrid work arrangement: office-based employees typically work in-office Tuesdays and Thursdays from one of Clearway's offices (San Francisco, San Diego, Scottsdale, Houston, Denver, or Princeton)
