Job Description

Clearway Energy seeks a Senior Associate for BESS Modeling & Structuring in San Diego to develop quantitative models driving battery energy storage valuation, optimization, and power market analysis. You will build and enhance CWENQuant, the company's internal modeling platform, create advanced BESS dispatch optimization models, and deliver analytical insights that directly inform trading, origination, development, and asset management decisions across a 11.6 GW portfolio in 26 states.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy production-grade optimization models and quantitative analysis for BESS dispatch optimization, renewable energy, gas generation, and data center projects across the US
  • Build stochastic and machine learning/deep learning models to forecast day-ahead, ancillary, and real-time market prices using fundamental variables such as load, gas prices, wind, and solar generation
  • Develop and maintain gas dispatch, heat-rate-curve optimization (HRCO), toll, and structured pricing models; perform mark-to-market analysis; support due diligence, underwriting, and credit analytics
  • Benchmark models against actual operations and market outcomes to improve forecast accuracy and optimization performance
  • Construct data pipelines with internal and external data sources; create automated workflows and market data dashboards using data science and optimization techniques
  • Analyze trading forwards versus historical and forecasted power prices to inform trading strategy, risk practices, origination opportunities, and contract pricing
  • Monitor macro and micro-level market conditions and assess their impact on wholesale power markets

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of quantitative or modeling experience, ideally in energy sector (trading firms, banks, utilities, IPPs, ISOs, or BESS companies)
  • Proficiency in Python; working knowledge of R, SQL, or similar languages
  • Hands-on experience developing machine learning/deep learning models using scikit-learn, Keras, or TensorFlow
  • Experience with linear and mixed-integer programming tools such as PuLP, Gurobi, or CPLEX
  • Working experience developing stochastic models from scratch
  • Knowledge of BESS, renewable, conventional gas asset, HRCO, and toll modeling (strongly preferred)
  • Strong understanding of power market economics, wholesale market structure, and asset operations in ISO markets (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to build robust, scalable quantitative and optimization models and stochastic or ML/DL forecasting frameworks (price, load, renewable generation)
  • US work authorization; Clearway will not sponsor non-immigrant visas (H-1B, TN, E-3, etc.) for this position

Benefits

  • Salary: $137,000–$177,000 USD (based on experience, skills, location, and other factors)
  • Annual cash bonus eligible, subject to personal and company performance goals
  • Comprehensive benefits for employees working 20+ hours per week: generous PTO, medical/dental/vision coverage, HSA with company contributions, health and dependent care FSAs, commuter benefits, relocation assistance, 401(k) with employer match, life and accident insurance, fertility programs, adoption assistance, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and benefits for same-sex marriages and domestic partnerships
  • Hybrid work arrangement: in-office collaboration on Tuesdays and Thursdays at San Diego office with company-provided meals and events
