Job Description

Clearway Energy is hiring a Senior Associate for BESS Modeling & Structuring in Scottsdale, Arizona. You will develop quantitative optimization models and forecasting frameworks to drive battery energy storage valuation, power market analysis, and trading decisions. This hybrid role involves building Clearway's internal modeling platform (CWENQuant), deploying production-grade BESS dispatch optimization models, and providing analytical support to trading, origination, development, and asset management teams across the company's 11.6 GW portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy complex optimization models for BESS dispatch optimization, renewable energy, gas generation, and data center infrastructure projects across US markets
  • Build stochastic and machine learning/deep learning models to forecast day-ahead, ancillary, and real-time power prices using fundamental variables such as load, gas prices, and renewable generation
  • Develop and maintain gas dispatch, heat rate call option (HRCO), toll, and other structured pricing models; perform mark-to-market analysis and support underwriting and credit analytics
  • Benchmark models against actual operations and market outcomes to improve forecast accuracy and optimization performance
  • Construct and enhance the CWENQuant quantitative modeling platform; develop data pipelines with internal and external sources, create automated workflows, and build market data dashboards
  • Analyze trading forwards relative to actual and historical power prices and fundamental forecasts to inform trading strategies and risk practices
  • Monitor macro and micro-level market conditions and their impact on energy markets and company operations
  • Deliver analytical insights to support risk management, trading activities, and market participation

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of quantitative or modeling experience, ideally in the energy sector (trading firms, banks, utilities, independent power producers, ISOs, or BESS companies)
  • Proficiency in Python; experience with R and SQL preferred
  • Hands-on experience developing machine learning/deep learning models using scikit-learn, Keras, or TensorFlow
  • Experience with linear and mixed-integer programming using tools such as PuLP, Gurobi, or CPLEX
  • Working experience developing stochastic models from scratch
  • Strong understanding of power market economics, wholesale market structure, and asset operations in ISO markets (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.)
  • Knowledge of BESS, renewable energy, conventional gas asset, HRCO, and toll modeling (strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to build high-quality, robust, and scalable quantitative optimization models and stochastic or ML/DL forecasting frameworks for price, load, or renewable generation forecasting
  • US work authorization; Clearway will not sponsor non-immigrant visas (H-1B, TN, E-3, etc.) for this position

Benefits

  • Salary: $137,000–$177,000 USD annually (based on location, skills, experience, education, and certifications)
  • Annual cash bonus eligible, subject to personal and company performance goals
  • Comprehensive benefits for employees working 20+ hours per week: generous PTO, medical/dental/vision insurance, HSAs with company contributions, health and dependent daycare FSAs, commuter benefits, relocation assistance, 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Life and accident insurance, fertility programs, adoption assistance, generous parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and benefits for employees in same-sex marriages, civil unions, and domestic partnerships
  • Hybrid work arrangement: office-based employees typically work in-person Tuesdays and Thursdays from Clearway's Scottsdale office (or one of six US locations: San Francisco, San Diego, Houston, Denver, or Princeton), with company-provided meals and events
