Job Description

Clearway Energy is hiring a Senior Associate for BESS Modeling & Structuring in Houston, Texas. You will develop quantitative models for battery energy storage valuation, dispatch optimization, gas generation, and power market analysis, building and maintaining Clearway's internal modeling platform (CWENQuant) while supporting trading, origination, development, and asset management teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy production-ready optimization models and quantitative analysis for BESS dispatch optimization, renewables, gas generation, and data center infrastructure projects across the US
  • Build stochastic and machine learning/deep learning models to forecast day-ahead, ancillary, and real-time power prices using load, gas prices, wind, and solar generation data
  • Develop and maintain gas dispatch, heat rate call option, toll, and structured pricing models; perform mark-to-market analysis to support due diligence, underwriting, and credit analytics
  • Benchmark models against actual operations and market outcomes to refine forecast accuracy and optimization performance
  • Analyze trading forwards against historical and actual power prices and fundamental forecasts to inform trading strategies and deal pricing
  • Build and enhance CWENQuant with data pipelines, automated workflows, and market data dashboards using data science and optimization techniques
  • Deliver analytical insights from modeling results to support risk management, budget planning, trading activities, and market advocacy
  • Monitor macro and micro-level market conditions and their impact on power markets

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of quantitative or modeling experience, ideally in energy sector (trading firms, banks, utilities, independent power producers, ISOs, or BESS companies)
  • Proficiency in Python; experience with R, SQL, or similar languages
  • Hands-on experience developing machine learning/deep learning models using scikit-learn, Keras, or TensorFlow
  • Working experience with linear and mixed-integer programming tools such as PuLP, Gurobi, or CPLEX
  • Experience developing stochastic models from scratch
  • Knowledge of BESS, renewable, conventional gas asset, heat rate call option, and toll modeling (strongly preferred)
  • Strong understanding of power market economics, wholesale market structure, and asset operations in ISO markets (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to build high-quality, robust, scalable quantitative and optimization models and forecasting frameworks (price, load, renewable generation)

  • Salary range: $137,000–$177,000 USD (Senior Associate level), depending on location, skills, experience, education, and certifications
