Job Description

Rosendin Electric, one of the largest employee-owned electrical contractors in the United States, is hiring a Systems Engineer in Sterling, VA to design and develop complex power distribution systems for hyper-scale data center campuses. You will join a team of engineers managing turnkey projects from pre-construction through commissioning, working with utility partners, renewable generation, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop power system protection and control schemes using overcurrent protection relays, transformer and bus differential protection relays, line differential protection relays, PLC, and RTAC automatic transfer systems
  • Design site-wide electrical distribution sequences of operation to ensure system reliability and resiliency
  • Coordinate with utility partners, turbine power plants, battery energy storage systems, and hybrid generation sources
  • Specify, evaluate, and review vendor and manufacturer submittals and equipment for conformance to system design requirements
  • Conduct vendor coordination meetings to ensure integrated system operation
  • Design mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical interlock systems
  • Specify relaying and instrument transformers for secure and dependable operation
  • Design system-wide automation using PLC or RTAC industrial controllers, including system overload prevention, busway interlocks, load management, generator plant load curtailment, and selective load pickup/shed schemes
  • Develop relay protection and automation logic for SEL, ABB, Siemens, and GE relays
  • Design protection and control architecture per IEC61850, mirrored bit, protection interfaces, Modbus, DNP, and related protocols
  • Conduct power system failure analysis, sequence of event analysis, and develop metering/triggering systems for event capture

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 8+ years of engineering design experience in electrical power distribution systems
  • In-depth working knowledge of SEL-751, SEL-787, SEL-487E, SEL-2411, SEL-3350 RTAC protective relays
  • In-depth working knowledge of Siemens 7SX82/85, Siemens 7UT protective relays
  • In-depth working knowledge of ABB REF615 protective relays
  • Strong understanding of power distribution systems, relaying, and automation systems
  • Ability to understand power system studies and analyze time-current characteristic (TCC) curves
  • In-depth product knowledge of electrical power system components: emergency generators, transformers, switchgear, switchboards, automatic transfer switches, protective relays, UPS systems, DRUPS systems, motors, static transfer switches, PDUs, battery storage systems, inverters, PV systems, wind turbines, and substation equipment
  • Up to 25% travel
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions including fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, and jobsite noise
