Job Description
SOLV Energy seeks an Assistant Commissioning Project Manager to support the planning, execution, and oversight of testing and commissioning activities across utility-scale solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and high-voltage substation projects. This hybrid role is based remote from California with frequent on-site presence at project locations. You will work alongside the Commissioning Manager and technical experts to ensure all systems meet installation, testing, and commissioning standards while maintaining safety and industry best practices.
Responsibilities
- Manage project commissioning teams, providing guidance and support to ensure efficient task execution
- Report daily project status and commissioning progress to the Commissioning Manager
- Review technical, contractual, and regulatory requirements; assist in developing project milestones, deliverables lists, commissioning plans, and procedures
- Communicate with OEM suppliers regarding equipment-specific testing and commissioning activities
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, and quality assurance teams to align commissioning efforts
- Develop and maintain integrated P6 testing and commissioning schedules, updated weekly
- Develop commissioning resource plans for assigned projects
- Review initial energization procedures and support Commissioning Engineer with switching activities
- Perform switching operations on MVAC collection circuits and auxiliary power circuits during hot commissioning
- Develop switching plans and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
- Identify technical issues and recommend corrective actions during commissioning and initial operation
- Manage pre-commissioning, cold, warm, and hot commissioning tests including synchronization, functional testing, utility capability testing, and project acceptance testing for BESS, HV, and PV systems
- Ensure all commissioning activities comply with industry standards, safety protocols, and environmental regulations
- Prepare detailed daily commissioning reports documenting test results, issues, and corrective actions
- Monitor project timelines and resources for successful delivery
- Document and incorporate lessons learned and equipment warranty tracking information
- Establish and manage safety tagging, lockout, red rope, and work permit programs from cold commissioning through substantial completion
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in testing and commissioning on utility-scale electrical systems
- Knowledge of utility-scale solar, battery storage, and high-voltage substation commissioning
- Knowledge and experience with HV and MV switching operations and equipment grounding
- Knowledge and experience managing and applying site lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety programs
- Knowledge and experience with substation protection and control (P&C) systems
- Knowledge of fiber installation and test requirements
- Understanding of SCADA system testing and commissioning
- Knowledge of DC systems architecture and testing requirements
- Proficiency with National Fire Protection Association/National Electrical Code (NFPA/NEC) standards
- Proficiency with IEEE/IES/API standards and NETA standards related to utility-scale solar generation, transformers, MV/LV cabling, grounding, and solar component testing
- Working knowledge of NERC compliance standards and ISO/TSO testing and operational requirements (preferred)
- Familiarity with DCS/SCADA control systems for utility-scale generation (preferred)
- Knowledge of microprocessor protective relay testing (preferred)
- Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, inverters, transformers, and electrical infrastructure
- Proven experience managing project teams and coordinating with multiple stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to frequently stoop, bend, crouch, reach, handle, and lift 50 or more lbs
- Constant ability to see details at close and distant range, hear, talk, and possess depth perception
- Occasional climbing and carrying; ability to work in high, exposed, or difficult-to-access locations
- Ability to work on or near lifts, machinery, and medium to high-voltage equipment
- Occasional exposure to harsh outdoor environments, variable weather, and high noise levels
- Willingness to travel extended periods for project assignments as needed
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship
