Job Description

SOLV Energy, a utility-scale solar, battery storage, and high-voltage substation infrastructure firm, seeks a BESS Engineer II to design, develop, and oversee battery energy storage system projects from concept through commissioning. This fully remote role requires technical depth in power systems, BESS equipment, and industry standards, with responsibility for engineering oversight across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and HV scopes on assigned projects.

Responsibilities

  • Review and verify BESS design and engineering for compliance with contracts, utility requirements, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) specifications with minimal supervision
  • Serve as technical contributor across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and high-voltage engineering disciplines on assigned projects
  • Manage Engineers of Record and third-party engineering partners to ensure scope clarity and on-time delivery
  • Coordinate with fire protection engineers and local fire departments/AHJs
  • Develop and review technical specifications, drawings, and component documentation to support procurement
  • Oversee procurement activities including vendor evaluation, technical recommendations, and drawing reviews
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors across design, procurement, installation, and commissioning phases
  • Direct system modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including field issue resolution, design clarifications, and minor redesigns
  • Support testing, validation, commissioning, energization, and initial synchronization activities
  • Monitor industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements; maintain current knowledge
  • Support business development through technical proposals, presentations, and customer consultations
  • Represent SOLV Engineering in customer and client meetings
  • Participate in regular team meetings and calls
  • Travel as required to support project execution

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 2+ years of electrical engineering experience focused on battery energy storage systems, renewables, or power systems
  • Working knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology, inverters, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and grid interconnection equipment
  • Knowledge of BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software
  • Experience with power system analysis tools (PSS/E, PSCAD, or equivalent) and simulation software
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards: NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, and utility-specific standards
  • Understanding of fire protection requirements per UL9540, UL9540A, and NFPA 855
  • Understanding of SCADA and Energy Management System communication protocols (IEC 61850)
  • Project management experience including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of EPC engineering workflows, design deliverables, submittals, document control, and partner coordination
  • Experience supporting solar, BESS, power, or civil/site projects in pre-construction and execution phases
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and Bluebeam
  • Ability to create and maintain trackers, logs, schedules, and reports
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without requiring employer sponsorship now or in the future
