Job Description
SOLV Energy seeks a Project Manager to oversee high-voltage substation construction, testing, and energization on utility-scale solar and battery storage projects nationwide. This fully remote role manages the complete substation lifecycle—from design review and procurement through commissioning—coordinating engineering, construction, and utility stakeholders to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of 69kV to 500kV infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Execute project engineering duties with emphasis on substation design, construction, testing, and energization
- Review Power Purchase Agreements, Generator Interconnection Agreements, Utility Interconnection Requirements, contract documents, System Impact Studies, Facility Studies, and Owner/Engineer specifications for substation scope compliance
- Oversee LNTP and early-stage deliverables for HV and substation workstreams, ensuring alignment with permitting and utility timelines
- Develop, manage, and track substation budgets including primary equipment procurement, civil sitework, grounding systems, protection and control, SCADA integration, and construction labor
- Create detailed subcontractor scopes of work for substation EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) including testing and commissioning
- Lead and manage substation subcontractors through RFI coordination, billing reviews, change orders, daily reporting, safety performance, and schedule tracking
- Monitor and control substation scope changes and associated commercial impacts
- Facilitate Project Kick-Off Meetings, site Kick-Off Meetings, Pre-Commissioning Walks, and Energization Readiness Reviews with dedicated focus on substation milestones and risks
- Manage RFIs and submittals relevant to substation scope, coordinating resolution with engineering and construction teams
- Lead Utility Coordination Meetings focused on relay settings, protection schemes, testing protocols, switching orders, and interconnection management
- Participate in Owner Coordination Meetings to communicate substation progress, risks, and technical issues
- Engage in system engineering team meetings to coordinate interdependencies between PV, BESS, and substation infrastructure
- Oversee procurement of long-lead substation components including power transformers, breakers, steel structures, control enclosures, relays, and communication systems
- Facilitate construction schedule and scope review meetings, identifying critical paths for substation construction and energization
- Coordinate PV and substation energization support including relay testing, functional checkouts, and utility witness testing
- Manage Final Completion Punchlist for all substation work and documentation including redlines, test reports, as-builts, relay settings, and regulatory compliance records
- Ensure safe work environment and enforce safety practices around energized substations and high-voltage equipment
- Maintain flexible availability for substation construction and commissioning events outside regular business hours
- Travel regularly to project sites, utility offices, and vendor facilities
- Support continuous improvement, lessons learned, and standardization efforts across substation projects
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in substation design, construction, or commissioning of utility-scale or industrial high-voltage systems (69kV to 500kV)
- Demonstrated experience working on projects in the Northeast Region of the United States
- Proven ability to manage multi-disciplinary substation projects through full lifecycle from kickoff to energization
- Familiarity with substation components: power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, grounding systems, control buildings, protection and control systems, relays, and SCADA
- Experience managing transmission line construction projects
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
- NFPA 70E "Qualified Person" certification preferred; must demonstrate familiarity with energized work practices and LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) protocols
- Working knowledge of utility operations, switching procedures, relay testing, and energization protocols
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Primavera P6 scheduling experience preferred
- Experience with CAD, PDF markup tools, and field documentation platforms a plus
- Ability to frequently walk, bend, stand, and lift 20+ pounds on uneven terrain at construction sites
- Ability to visually inspect and verify HV equipment installations, conduct site walks, and observe electrical testing safely
- Occasional climbing, working at heights, or accessing substation steel platforms required
- Ability to work in outdoor environments and in proximity to energized equipment
- Compliance with all site-specific PPE and safety training requirements
