Clearway Energy seeks Solar Technicians for its Rosamond, California operations facility. Reporting to the Lead Technician, you will troubleshoot, maintain, service, and repair solar PV systems and associated equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable plant operation. This is a progression-based role with four distinct levels—Trainee, Level I, Level II, and Level III—each with defined responsibilities and compensation.
Responsibilities
Technician Trainee
- Shadow and assist experienced technicians in PV systems and electrical component maintenance tasks.
- Maintain hand tools in good working order and organized condition.
- Operate and maintain a service vehicle.
- Work flexible on-call schedule including weeknights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Pass an advancement exam and oral board within six months of hire.
Solar Technician Level I
- Assist higher-level technicians in troubleshooting, maintaining, servicing, and repairing solar PV systems and associated equipment.
- Perform technical and administrative duties related to power facility operations and maintenance.
- Support all areas of site operations as directed by Site Lead and Site Manager with minimal supervision.
- Ensure work is performed in accordance with environmental and safety requirements.
- Pass an advancement exam and oral board within six months of hire.
Solar Technician Level II
- Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance and operations independently or in work crews.
- Travel as needed.
- Pass an advancement exam and oral board within six months of hire.
Solar Technician Level III
- Execute routine electrical troubleshooting and repair on PV solar equipment.
- Perform instrumentation calibration and troubleshooting.
- Perform complex maintenance such as distributed control systems and inverter troubleshooting.
- Complete work orders in the preventive maintenance management system.
- Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders in coordination with Operations Center.
- Operate all electrical and mechanical PV solar power plant systems.
- Participate in job hazard analyses, pre-job briefings, and LOTO documentation.
- Write plant orders, plant procedures, and operating instructions as assigned.
- Ensure work is performed in accordance with environmental and safety requirements.
- Pass an exam and oral board within six months of hire.
Requirements
Technician Trainee
- High school diploma or GED (or willingness to obtain within first six months of employment).
- Valid driver's license with good driving record.
- Demonstrable mechanical aptitude; no prior electrical experience required.
- Ability to work safely in a wide range of adverse climates and environments.
- Knowledge of and ability to use various hand tools.
- Ability to create, edit, or modify Microsoft Word and Excel documents.
- Ability to work overtime and non-standard working hours (nights, holidays, weekends) as needed.
- Ability to travel as required.
Solar Technician Level I
- Demonstrable mechanical aptitude and basic electrical knowledge from direct work experience such as electrical construction trades, power generation or utility employment, or licensed/apprentice electrician background.
- Ability to work with electrical wires and differentiate between color-coded wires.
- Understanding of general workplace safety and ability to follow safety standards.
- Ability to read schematics and wiring diagrams (preferred).
- Ability to meet requirements of Clearway Energy Group's Qualified Electrical Worker program.
- Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations.
Solar Technician Level II
- 1+ years of experience in a power plant or PV solar O&M/EPC role.
- Alternatively, 2+ years of field experience with significant I&E, I&C, and/or C&I electrician experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals (single craft journeyman skills) such as electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid state theory application.
- Basic knowledge of operational characteristics of equipment and associated control devices installed in power facilities.
- Demonstrable mechanical aptitude and basic electrical knowledge.
Solar Technician Level III
- 4+ years of PV solar experience; I&E, I&C, and/or C&I electrician experience will be considered in lieu of applicable solar experience.
- Proven experience with a multitude of electrical and construction projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals (journeyman skills) such as electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid state theory application.
- Knowledge of complex analog and digital instrumentation and control systems.
- Understanding of proper methods for troubleshooting, repairing, and adjusting instruments and control systems.
- Experience administering safe methods to clear equipment, use of tools, and plant safety rules.
- Understanding of reporting procedures, maintenance procedures, and practices.
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical prints.
- Familiarity with PV solar plant terminology and nomenclature.
- Qualified to perform routine and emergency operations at a solar generation facility and switchyard.
- Ability to travel approximately 5%.

Salary Range by Level: Technician Trainee: $50,000–$60,000; Solar Technician I: $54,000–$77,000; Solar Technician II: $62,000–$88,000; Solar Technician III: $88,000–$107,000. Actual compensation depends on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training, certifications, and other factors permitted by law.
Clearway Energy will not sponsor nonimmigrant visas for this position. A 2-year technical degree or equivalent journeyman certification is preferred. This is an onsite position.
