Job Description

AES Corporation, a leading global power company, seeks a BESS Technician I for its Phoenix, Arizona operations team. In this role, you will support the preventative and corrective maintenance of utility-scale and distribution-scale battery energy storage systems, working to keep AES's growing portfolio operating above industry standards under the direction of Field Service leads.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance and operations on energy storage equipment including inverters, transformers, battery modules, DC collection equipment, and AC collection and distribution systems
  • Conduct routine maintenance work including electrical troubleshooting and repair, instrumentation calibration, and basic inverter troubleshooting as assigned
  • Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders
  • Operate electrical and mechanical power plant systems
  • Perform technical and administrative duties associated with energy storage site operations and maintenance
  • Assist with site vegetation management including operation of tractors, riding mowers, and related equipment
  • Write and assist with plant orders, plant procedures, operating instructions, and related documentation
  • Ensure all work complies with environmental and safety requirements
  • Participate in required training, which may include limited travel
  • Work independently or in crews depending on skills and experience level

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals such as electrical measurements, control circuits, or operational characteristics of power facility equipment
  • Experience with electrical systems and familiarity with basic safety principles including LOTO and electrical safety
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
  • Ability to operate personal computers with standard business software
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations
  • Physical capability to work outside in normal energy storage power plant and office environments, including high and low ambient temperatures and humidity
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, kneel, twist, climb stairs and ladders, and enter plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data
  • Ability to wear and work with personal protective safety equipment including respirators, safety glasses, hard hats, appropriate footwear, and ear plugs
  • Ability to work occasionally around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals
  • Occasional lifting as required to perform job duties
  • Availability to work overtime and non-standard working hours as required
  • Availability to travel to sites outside the typical work area
  • Technical degree, solar certification, or energy storage certification (preferred)
  • Experience in energy storage system installation (preferred)
  • Experience with SCADA and computerized maintenance management systems (recommended)
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish and Portuguese (preferred)
