Job Description

AES Corporation seeks a Senior Solutions Engineer – Systems Integration to lead the technical integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) from design through field deployment and operation. Based in Louisville, CO, this role owns how BESS subsystems—energy storage, power conversion, safety, controls, and communications—function together electrically and mechanically across utility-scale projects. You will serve as a technical authority for system architecture, troubleshoot deployed assets, and mentor junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end systems engineering for BESS products, from requirements definition through deployment and field operation
  • Develop and maintain system-level requirements, interface control documents (ICDs), specifications, and compliance matrices
  • Integrate multiple BESS subsystems including energy storage, power conversion systems (PCS), safety, controls, and communications
  • Review and approve BESS electrical and controls designs, including schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials (BOMs), and integration documentation
  • Interpret and apply applicable BESS safety codes and standards (UL, IEC, NFPA, IFC, and related regulations)
  • Support prototype builds, certification testing, and production transition, ensuring system-level validation and qualification plans align with codes and project requirements
  • Serve as technical authority for BESS system architecture and integration into utility-scale projects
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical, controls, and system-level issues on deployed BESS assets
  • Perform root cause analysis for field failures and drive corrective and preventive actions
  • Participate in permitting and local jurisdiction discussions, manage integration risks, and support long-term operational performance improvements
  • Deliver technical guidance and training to internal and external teams on BESS safety and emergency response
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of BESS integration practices

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline
  • 5–7 years of hands-on experience in BESS or complex electromechanical system development and integration
  • Strong experience with electrical systems, energy storage, controls, and power electronics
  • Experience working across multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and integrators
  • Proven ability to support fielded systems and post-installation troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with BESS standards including UL 9540 / 9540A
  • Knowledge of BESS safety standards and compliance, including UL 9540 / 9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 110 / 111, NFPA 72, NFPA 68 / 69
  • Willingness to travel to factories and project sites (approximately 25%)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering
  • Experience with utility-scale BESS deployments
  • Hands-on experience with battery and electrical test equipment

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life insurance
  • 401(k) eligibility
  • Paid time off including vacation, sick leave, and parental leave
  • Annual bonus eligibility
  • Base salary: $113,000–$141,525/year (based on market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience)
