Job Description

AES is seeking a Solar Technician I for utility-scale photovoltaic operations and maintenance at its Keydet site in Charles City County, VA. This role involves preventive and corrective maintenance on solar PV equipment, substations, and power plant systems across the AES CE portfolio. You will report to the Field Service lead and work independently or as part of a crew, depending on your qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance on utility-scale solar equipment, including inverters (SMA, Advanced Energy, Power Electronics, EATON, TMEIC, SunGrow, Solectria), trackers (NEXTracker, ATI), combiner boxes, PV modules, DC collection systems, and AC collection and distribution systems
  • Conduct electrical troubleshooting, repair work, and instrumentation calibration on assigned equipment
  • Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders
  • Operate electrical and mechanical power plant systems
  • Perform routine maintenance and basic inverter troubleshooting as directed by supervisor or work orders
  • Assist with site vegetation management, including operation of tractors, riding mowers, and related equipment
  • Write and assist with plant orders, procedures, operating instructions, and technical documentation
  • Participate in required training
  • Work in compliance with environmental and safety requirements

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience with electrical systems and familiarity with basic safety principles, including LOTO (lockout/tagout) and electrical safety
  • Technical degree or solar certification (preferred)
  • Experience in solar system installation (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals, such as electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid-state theory (preferred)
  • Experience with preventive and corrective maintenance on solar equipment
  • Proficiency with personal computers and standard business software
  • Experience with SCADA and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (recommended)
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations
  • Ability to commute daily to Charles City County, VA site
  • Capability to work at heights, on ladders, and in elevated positions
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, kneel, twist, climb, and enter plant equipment for inspection and data collection
  • Ability to work around rotating, energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals
  • Ability to lift as appropriate for duties
  • Willingness to work overtime and non-standard hours as required
  • Willingness to travel to sites outside typical area
