Construction Manager

The Construction Manager role at AES oversees utility-scale solar and battery energy storage system projects. The position is located in US Flexible, VA, and functions as the onsite owner’s representative monitoring work performed by third-party EPC contractors. The role requires five days per week on site along with travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the safety department to maintain safety goals as the highest priority.
• Establish and maintain transparent communication with project landowners regarding timelines, impacts, and progress while addressing concerns such as dust, noise, boundaries, and access.
• Manage monthly and weekly drone photo progress updates on site.
• Identify and assist the EPC with management of site environmental and safety impacts and facilitate communication with the DEQ and AHJ on environmental concerns.
• Prepare and manage the project execution plan, schedule, kickoff meetings, and closeout process.
• Manage and direct AES-hired onsite contract employees in QC, safety, and commissioning roles, including verification of time records.
• Ensure effective management of prime contracts and subcontracts, including change orders and variance documentation.
• Monitor utility-scale solar and BESS construction by third-party EPC contractors for compliance with contract and permit requirements on schedule, budget, scope, and deliverables.
• Complete daily safety walks and submit reports to the head of internal safety programs while managing internal safety goals with EPC contractors.
• Track project progress against the schedule, manage remediation plans, and discuss daily objectives with the EPC contractor while reporting risks and issues.
• Verify and sign off on construction milestones in civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical scopes and update internal tracking software.
• Verify adherence to QA/QC plans, minimize punch lists, and confirm work against scopes of work and design plans.
• Coordinate with in-house engineering for independent engineer reports and job walks.
• Collect and upload or route EPC deliverables such as test reports and progress reports for sign-off.
• Review draft invoices with the EPC contractor and sign off on completed work.
• Review proposed change orders as the first line of defense and escalate as needed.
• Manage ongoing and final punch lists from mechanical completion to project close.
• Review and approve monthly pencil copies with the project management team.

Requirements

• Five years of onsite utility-scale solar, battery storage, and/or substation construction management experience.
• Advanced knowledge of solar construction management processes, means, and methods, plus expert knowledge of building products, construction details, rules, regulations, and quality standards.
• OSHA 30 certification.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Extensive knowledge of Procore for daily use.
• Ability to operate a drone for photo progress updates.
• Ability to operate Google Earth.
• Ability to work in various climates and walk sites as necessary for inspections.
• Willingness to travel and be on site five days per week.
• FAA 107 license required if not already held.
• Bachelor of Science degree preferred but not required.

• Expected base salary range of $108,000 to $135,150 per year at commencement, with annual bonus eligibility; actual compensation varies based on market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
