Solar Technician

The Solar Technician role at Clearway Energy is based in Newburgh, New York, and supports solar PV assets in Newburgh and Shoreham, New York, as well as New London and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the position covers troubleshooting, maintenance, service, and repair of PV systems and associated equipment to sustain safe and efficient operations. Multiple experience levels from Trainee to Level III are available, with pay ranges of $50,000–$60,000 for Trainee, $54,000–$77,000 for Level I, $62,000–$88,000 for Level II, and $88,000–$107,000 for Level III; the role is eligible for an annual performance-based cash bonus.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety procedures, observe safe working practices, and maintain a safe working environment under direct supervision.
• Shadow and assist experienced technicians with PV systems and electrical component maintenance.
• Maintain hand tools in good working order and organized; operate and maintain a service vehicle.
• Work a flexible on-call schedule that may include weeknights, weekends, and holidays.
• Pass an advancement exam and oral board upon training program completion within six months from hire.
• Assist higher-level technicians with troubleshooting, maintaining, servicing, and repairing solar PV systems and associated equipment.
• Perform technical and administrative duties associated with operating and maintaining a power facility in accordance with environmental and safety requirements.
• Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance independently or in work crews.
• Execute routine electrical troubleshooting and repair, instrumentation calibration, and troubleshooting.
• Perform complex maintenance such as distributed control systems and inverter troubleshooting as assigned.
• Complete work orders for the preventive maintenance management system.
• Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders while working with the Operations Center.
• Operate all electrical and mechanical PV Solar power plant systems.
• Participate in training, JHA, PJB, and LOTO documentation as required.
• Write Plant Orders, Plant Procedures, Operating Instructions, and other documents as assigned.
• Travel as needed, with approximately 5% travel for Level III.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required, or willingness to obtain within the first six months of employment.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Demonstrable mechanical aptitude and ability to use various hand tools.
• Ability to safely work in a wide range of adverse climates and environments.
• Ability to work overtime and non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.
• Ability to create, edit, or modify Microsoft Word and Excel documents.
• Ability to meet the requirements of Clearway Energy Group’s Qualified Electrical Worker program.
• Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations.
• Ability to read schematics and wiring diagrams preferred.
• 1+ years of experience in a power plant or PV Solar O&M/EPC, or 2+ years of field experience with significant I&E, I&C, and/or C&I Electrician experience for Level II.
• Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals such as electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid-state theory application.
• Basic knowledge of operational characteristics of equipment and associated control devices in power facilities.
• 4+ years of PV solar experience required for Level III; I&E, I&C, and/or C&I Electrician experience considered in lieu.
• Proven experience with a multitude of electrical/construction projects and knowledge of complex analog and digital instrumentation and control systems.
• Proper methods for troubleshooting, repairing, and adjusting instruments and control systems.
• Experience administering safe methods to clear equipment, use of tools, and plant safety rules.
• Understanding of reporting procedures, maintenance procedures, and electrical and mechanical prints.
• Familiarity with PV Solar plant terminology and nomenclature.
• Qualified to perform routine and emergency operations at a solar generation facility and switchyard.
• 2-year technical degree or equivalent Journeyman certification/qualifications preferred.
