Solar Technician

The Solar Technician position at Clearway Energy supports PV assets across Newburgh and Shoreham, New York, as well as New London and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the role covers troubleshooting, maintenance, service, and repair of solar PV systems and related equipment to sustain safe and efficient operations. Compensation ranges from $50,000–$60,000 for Trainee to $88,000–$107,000 for Level III, with level progression tied to exams and demonstrated capability.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment under direct supervision as a Trainee.
• Shadow and assist experienced technicians with PV system and electrical component maintenance.
• Maintain hand tools in good working order and operate a service vehicle.
• Work a flexible on-call schedule including weeknights, weekends, and holidays.
• Complete an advancement exam and oral board within six months of hire for level progression.
• Assist higher-level technicians with troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing solar PV systems and associated equipment at Level I.
• Perform technical and administrative duties for power facility operations with minimal supervision.
• Ensure work complies with environmental and safety requirements.
• Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance independently or in crews at Level II.
• Execute routine electrical troubleshooting, repair, and instrumentation calibration at Level III.
• Handle complex maintenance including distributed control systems and inverter troubleshooting as assigned.
• Complete work orders in the preventive maintenance management system.
• Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders in coordination with the Operations Center.
• Operate all electrical and mechanical PV solar power plant systems.
• Participate in required training, JHA, PJB, and LOTO documentation.
• Write plant orders, procedures, and operating instructions as assigned.
• Travel as needed, up to approximately 5 percent for Level III.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, or ability to obtain within first six months of employment.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Ability to safely work in a wide range of adverse climates and environments.
• Ability to travel as required and work overtime or non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Knowledge of and ability to use various hand tools.
• Ability to create, edit, or modify Microsoft Word and Excel documents.
• Demonstrable mechanical aptitude with no prior electrical experience required for Trainee level.
• Basic electrical knowledge gained through construction trade, power generation, utility, or electrician apprentice experience for Level I.
• Ability to differentiate color-coded wires and meet requirements of the Qualified Electrical Worker program.
• 1+ year of power plant or PV solar O&M/EPC experience, or 2+ years of field I&E, I&C, or C&I electrician experience for Level II.
• Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals including electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid-state theory.
• 4+ years of PV solar experience, or equivalent I&E, I&C, or C&I electrician experience, for Level III.
• Knowledge of complex analog and digital instrumentation, control systems, and proper troubleshooting methods.
• Experience with safe equipment clearance methods, tool use, and plant safety rules.
• Knowledge of reporting procedures, maintenance practices, and electrical/mechanical prints.
• Familiarity with PV solar plant terminology and nomenclature.
• Qualification to perform routine and emergency operations at a solar generation facility and switchyard.
• 2-year technical degree or equivalent journeyman certification preferred.
