Solar Technician

The Solar Technician role at Clearway Energy is based in Newburgh, New York, and supports solar PV assets across Newburgh and Shoreham, New York, plus New London and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the position covers troubleshooting, maintenance, service, and repair of solar PV systems and associated equipment, with duties scaled by level from Trainee through III. Pay ranges from $50,000–$60,000 for Trainee to $88,000–$107,000 for Level III.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment under direct supervision as a Trainee.
• Shadow and assist experienced technicians with PV system and electrical component maintenance as a Trainee.
• Operate and maintain a service vehicle and keep hand tools organized and in good working order.
• Work a flexible on-call schedule including weeknights, weekends, and holidays when needed.
• Assist higher-level technicians with troubleshooting, maintaining, servicing, and repairing solar PV systems and associated equipment at Level I.
• Perform technical and administrative duties associated with operating and maintaining a power facility at Level I.
• Execute corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance independently or in crews at Level II.
• Perform routine electrical troubleshooting, repair, and instrumentation calibration at Level III.
• Handle complex maintenance such as distributed control systems and inverter troubleshooting at Level III.
• Complete work orders in the preventive maintenance management system at Level III.
• Prepare and implement switching and clearance orders in coordination with the Operations Center at Level III.
• Operate all electrical and mechanical PV solar power plant systems at Level III.
• Participate in training, JHA, PJB, and LOTO documentation at Level III.
• Write plant orders, procedures, and operating instructions as assigned at Level III.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required, or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment for Trainee level.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Ability to safely work in a wide range of adverse climates and environments and to travel as required.
• Ability to use various hand tools and operate a service vehicle.
• Ability to work overtime and non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.
• Demonstrable mechanical aptitude for Trainee level; basic electrical knowledge and ability to differentiate color-coded wires for Level I.
• Ability to meet requirements of Clearway Energy Group’s Qualified Electrical Worker program for Level I.
• 1+ years of power plant or PV solar O&M/EPC experience, or 2+ years of field I&E, I&C, or C&I electrician experience for Level II.
• Demonstrated knowledge of electrical or mechanical fundamentals such as electrical measurements, control circuits, and solid-state theory for Level II and III.
• 4+ years of PV solar experience, or equivalent I&E, I&C, or C&I electrician experience, for Level III.
• Knowledge of complex analog and digital instrumentation and control systems, troubleshooting methods, and electrical and mechanical prints for Level III.
• Familiarity with PV solar plant terminology and nomenclature for Level III.
• Qualification to perform routine and emergency operations at a solar generation facility and switchyard for Level III.
• Ability to travel approximately 5% for Level III.
