Job Description

The BESS Engineer III role at SOLV Energy supports design, development, implementation, and optimization of battery energy storage systems on utility-scale projects. The position is fully remote and reports within the engineering function for solar, BESS, and high-voltage substation work nationwide. Specific location expectations will be clarified during interviews.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical subject matter expert for BESS engineering scopes and provide guidance to project teams
  • Lead design and engineering of battery energy storage systems while ensuring compliance with contracts, utilities, and AHJ requirements
  • Review feasibility studies, site assessments, and system sizing analyses to recommend BESS configurations and augmentation provisions
  • Act as senior technical contributor across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and HV engineering scopes
  • Manage Engineers of Record and third-party engineering partners for scope clarity and delivery timelines
  • Coordinate with fire protection engineers and local fire departments or AHJs
  • Develop and review technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for BESS components to support procurement
  • Provide technical oversight during procurement including vendor recommendations and drawing reviews
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors on design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of BESS systems
  • Oversee system modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability
  • Provide engineering support during construction including field issue resolution, design clarifications, and minor redesigns
  • Support testing, validation, commissioning, energization, and initial synchronization activities
  • Mentor junior engineers on BESS design principles and practices
  • Monitor industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Support business development through proposals, presentations, and technical consultations
  • Represent SOLV Engineering in customer and client meetings
  • Participate in regular team meetings and calls
  • Travel as required to support project execution

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • 3+ years of electrical engineering experience focused on BESS, renewables, or power systems
  • Expertise in design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems including lithium-ion batteries, inverters, BMS, and grid interconnection equipment
  • Knowledge of BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software
  • Proficiency in power system analysis tools such as PSS/E and PSCAD
  • Working knowledge of NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, and utility standards
  • Understanding of grid operations and regulatory requirements including FERC Order 841 and IEEE 1547
  • Understanding of fire protection requirements including UL9540, UL9540A, and NFPA855
  • Understanding of communication protocols used in SCADA and Energy Management Systems including IEC 61850
  • Project management experience including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management
  • Understanding of EPC engineering workflows including design deliverables, submittals, and document control
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and Bluebeam
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship now or in the future
