Job Description

This position is Assistant Commissioning Project Manager, PV - West Region with SOLV Energy in Lost Hills, CA. The role supports the planning, execution, and oversight of testing and commissioning activities for high-voltage, battery energy storage systems, and photovoltaic projects. The position is based full-time on the jobsite in California and requires travel, including extended out-of-town stays as project needs dictate.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the project commissioning team and provide guidance and training on task execution.
  • Report daily to the Commissioning Manager on the status of assigned projects.
  • Review technical, contractual, and regulatory requirements and assist with development of project milestone lists, commissioning plans, and procedures.
  • Communicate with OEM suppliers on equipment-specific testing and commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, and quality assurance teams on commissioning alignment.
  • Assist with development and weekly updates of integrated P6 testing and commissioning schedules.
  • Assist with development of the project commissioning resource plan.
  • Review initial energization procedures and assist with switching activities as requested.
  • Perform switching activities of MVAC collection circuits and aux power circuits during hot commissioning.
  • Develop switching plans and LOTO procedures as required.
  • Identify technical issues during commissioning or initial operation and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support development of standards and processes to improve business operations.
  • Manage all pre-commissioning, cold, warm, and hot commissioning tests including synchronization, functional testing, utility capability testing, and project acceptance testing for BESS, HV, and PV systems.
  • Ensure commissioning activities comply with industry standards, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Prepare detailed daily commissioning reports covering test results, issues, and corrective actions.
  • Monitor project timelines and resources to support successful delivery.
  • Incorporate feedback and lessons learned to improve commissioning processes.
  • Prepare and maintain lessons learned and equipment warranty tracking logs.
  • Establish and manage safety tagging, lockout, red rope, and work permit programs to ensure site compliance from cold commissioning through substantial completion.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in testing and commissioning on utility scale electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of commissioning for utility scale solar, battery storage, and high voltage substations.
  • Experience with HV and MV switching operations and equipment grounding.
  • Experience with management and application of site lock-out/tag-out safety program procedures.
  • Knowledge of substation protection and control systems.
  • Knowledge of fiber installation and test requirements.
  • Understanding of SCADA system testing and commissioning requirements.
  • Knowledge of DC systems architecture and testing requirements.
  • Knowledge of NFPA/NEC, IEEE/IES/API, NETA, and IEEE standards related to utility scale solar generation including transformers, MV and LV cabling, grounding, and solar component testing.
  • Understanding of commercial performance of power plants.
  • Working knowledge of NERC compliance standards along with ISO and TSO testing and operational requirements.
  • Familiarity with DCS/SCADA control systems for utility scale generation.
  • Knowledge of microprocessor protective relay testing.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, inverters, transformers, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Proven experience managing project teams and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Occasional exposure to weather, harsh outdoor environments, and variable site conditions.
  • Frequent stooping, bending, crouching, reaching, handling, finger dexterity, sitting, standing, walking, and lifting 50 or more lbs.
  • Constant finger dexterity, ability to see details at close range and distance, hear, talk, and possess depth perception.
  • Occasional climbing, carrying, proximity to moving mechanical parts, and work in high, exposed, or difficult-to-access places.
  • High noise intensity level possible.
  • Work on or near lifts and other machines and near medium and high voltage.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship now or in the future.
