Types of Solar Technician Roles

Solar technicians keep installed systems producing. A residential service route differs from utility-scale O&M. Choose the setting that matches your experience and preferred schedule.

Solar Service Technician

Service technicians respond to faults on operating systems. They read monitoring data and diagnose inverters. They also replace failed components and clear error codes to restore production.

Solar Field Technician

Field technicians travel between sites for inspections, testing and repairs. The work varies more than new construction. Troubleshooting matters more than installation speed.

Solar Panel Repair Technician

Repair technicians fix damaged or underperforming panels. They replace modules and reseat connectors. Racking repairs and output verification complete the job.

PV O&M Technician

O&M technicians support a fleet of operating systems. They diagnose production and test module strings. Thermal scans and scheduled maintenance protect uptime and revenue.

Solar Maintenance Technician

Maintenance technicians perform torque checks and cleaning. They also update firmware and document service history. The schedule is steadier than emergency-callout work.

Commissioning / Startup Technician

Startup technicians bring new systems online. They run functional tests and verify communication between inverters, batteries and monitoring. Punch-list work comes before customer or utility handoff.

Solar Technician Training & Skills

Solar-technician training centers on field troubleshooting. These qualifications appear most often in postings. They separate a PV repair specialist from a general maintenance hire.

Hands-on PV or electrical experience

Most solar technician postings ask for a year or more of field experience in solar O&M, installation, or an adjacent electrical trade. That background is what makes troubleshooting safe and efficient.

Solar technician training & certifications

NABCEP PV Associate is the common entry credential. Experienced technicians may pursue PVIP. OSHA 10 or 30 appears frequently, along with manufacturer training from Tesla, Enphase or SolarEdge.

Troubleshooting & diagnostic skills

Work reads multimeter readings, inverter fault logs, and monitoring platforms daily. Strength here separates a repair-style technician from someone who just swaps parts.

Electrical code & safety knowledge

Understanding NEC Article 690 (PV systems), arc flash safety, and proper lockout/tagout on live DC circuits is non-negotiable for service work on energized systems.

An apprenticeship combines paid field experience with a path to certification. See our guide to how to get a solar apprenticeship and browse solar apprenticeship programs to map a route.

Our solar certifications by job role guide explains what employers expect at each level.

Certifications That Matter

Most employers will train a motivated hire on the specifics of a given inverter or panel brand. These are the credentials that come up most often in solar technician postings and that open the door to better-paying solar service technician jobs.

NABCEP PV Associate (PVAS)

The standard entry credential for new solar technicians. Covers PV system fundamentals, safety, and basic troubleshooting.

NABCEP PV Installation Professional (PVIP)

The advanced credential for experienced techs. Validates hands-on competency with conductors, raceways, and system monitoring — documented field hours matter.

OSHA 10 / OSHA 30

Construction and safety compliance training. OSHA 30 is frequently required on commercial and utility-scale service work.

Manufacturer certifications

Product-specific training from Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, and others. Increasingly required for warranty work and repair claims.

Solar Technician Salary & Pay Ranges

Region, project scale and credentials shape technician pay. Service and repair usually pay more than entry-level installation because troubleshooting is required. Track state pay on our Solar Technician Salary by State page, built from job-listing data.

Job Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong growth for PV work over the next decade. Every new system adds years of maintenance and repair demand. Service hiring can therefore continue long after the initial construction boom.

Solar Technician Job FAQ

What does a solar technician do?

A solar technician maintains systems already in operation. Daily work includes inverter diagnosis and production checks. Technicians also replace failed components and perform scheduled inspections.

What is the difference between a solar installer and a solar technician?

Installers build new systems on roofs or ground mounts. Technicians service systems that already produce power. Their work continues through the operating life of the equipment.

What is a solar technician salary?

Aggregated postings place entry-level technicians around $20 to $26 an hour. Experienced field and service roles run from $28 to $38. Senior or licensed O&M technicians can exceed $40 an hour and may receive per diem.

How do I become a solar technician without experience?

Start as an installer or service helper, then build troubleshooting experience. NABCEP PV Associate and OSHA training can strengthen an application. An apprenticeship provides a structured paid route.

What certifications do solar technicians need?

NABCEP PV Associate is the recognized entry credential. Experienced technicians may need PVIP. OSHA and manufacturer training also appear frequently. Some employers require an electrical license for work beyond basic component replacement.

Are solar repair technicians in demand?

Yes. Every new installation adds equipment that will need maintenance and repair. Service work can be steadier than construction because inspections and fault response recur throughout the system life.

Which states hire the most solar technicians?

California, Texas and Florida have large installed fleets and strong service demand. Arizona, Nevada, the Carolinas and the Northeast also hire technicians. Utility-scale markets need field and O&M teams for large arrays.
