Types of Solar Installer Roles
"Solar installer" covers residential rooftops, commercial sites and utility-scale fields. Each market has its own pay, schedule and equipment. Physical demands differ too.
Residential Installer
Residential installers build 4 to 12kW rooftop systems. Crews of two to four may visit several homes in a day. Most entry-level hiring happens in this market.
Commercial & Industrial Installer
Commercial installers work on warehouses, schools and office buildings. Systems range from 50kW into the megawatts. Prevailing-wage projects may use union crews and more formal workflows.
Utility-Scale Installer
Utility crews build ground-mount arrays across large solar farms. Projects run longer and often pay more. Traveling workers may receive per diem. The work includes trackers and higher-voltage combiner systems.
Lead Installer / Foreman
The lead assigns daily work and checks quality before inspection. Employers usually want two to four years of field experience. Candidates also need a record of clean, code-compliant installations.
O&M Technician
O&M technicians maintain operating systems. They clean panels, troubleshoot inverters and diagnose monitoring faults. Warranty repairs and a steadier year-round schedule are common.
Battery Storage Installer
Battery installers build and commission residential or commercial storage systems. Much of the work is paired with PV. Demand is rising as more contracts include storage.
Certifications
Most employers train motivated entry-level hires. Credentials become more important when moving from helper to lead installer. Higher-paying postings often screen for them directly.
NABCEP PV Associate
Entry-level credential for people new to the field. Tests core PV knowledge before hands-on field experience. A strong signal to employers that you understand the fundamentals.
NABCEP PV Installation Professional
The credential that matters most for advancement. Requires documented field experience plus a technical exam. Most lead installer postings either require it or list it as strongly preferred.
OSHA 10
OSHA 10 is the baseline most employers require.
OSHA 30
OSHA 30 is more common for foreman and supervisory roles, and some commercial general contractors require it site-wide.
Solar Installer Salary Ranges
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $51,860 median annual wage in May 2024. Region and project type change the offer. Certifications can change it as well.

Residential helper, on-the-job training
Most employers expect a valid OSHA 10 card before you set foot on a jobsite — it's frequently a condition of hire, even for helper-level roles. Pairing it with a NABCEP PV Associate (PVA) credential signals baseline PV knowledge and helps you stand out from other entry-level applicants.

Experienced Installer
National median, 2+ years field experience
At this stage, employers increasingly look for a NABCEP PV Installer Specialist (PVIS) certification, which validates hands-on competency with PV conductors, raceways, and system monitoring — documented field hours matter more than classroom time at this level.

Lead Installer / Utility-Scale
Foreman roles, licensed electricians, commercial projects
Supervisory and utility-scale roles typically require an OSHA 30 card alongside the NABCEP PV Installation Professional (PVIP) certification — widely considered the gold standard for design, installation, and commissioning across the industry.
Job Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 42% employment growth from 2024 to 2034. That is among the fastest rates for any tracked occupation. Roughly 4,100 openings are expected each year.
